Supporting those who served: Helping homeless veterans build confidence and skills

Ahead of Armed Forces Day this weekend, we’re proud to share the story of a recent employability training session we delivered for client Riverside at Mike Jackson House in Aldershot, a specialist accommodation service for homeless veterans.

Riverside Group is one of the leading registered providers of social housing in the UK, with over 75,000 homes. It provides support and affordable housing to people of all ages and circumstances throughout England.

Around ten residents attended the five-hour workshop, where we offered one-to-one support with CV writing, interview techniques and job application tips. We carried out mock interviews, helped individuals renew industry training memberships such as forklift licences, and even created a digital CV for one resident who only had a hard copy and no access to a computer.

For us, this wasn’t just about employability – it was about confidence, dignity and giving people the tools to take the next step, whatever that may be.

This pilot session is part of a broader programme we’re rolling out across our contracts, aimed at helping people from all walks of life, including students, care leavers and social housing residents, prepare for work and build their personal skills. With input from our HR and operations teams, we’re creating engaging, practical sessions that can be delivered across different customer sites.

Steve Oxlade, project support at Riverside, said: “The training was very fun and engaging, and the facilitators were very knowledgeable. More people came than expected which is great. We look forward to welcoming you back for the second training session.”

Social value at Chequers

We’re also working with the Social Value Portal to measure the financial and social impact of our work, ensuring it delivers lasting change for individuals and communities. This is just one example of the many ways we’re making our social value strategy real.

Thank you to everyone who took part – we’re looking forward to the next session!
